Hello, and welcome to my home page...
I have a wide range of professional experience in research, engineering, systems, networking, and technology. Before starting my own consulting business in 2002 I spent nearly two decades in research and technology at Xerox PARC. I have held numerous roles as a key individual contributor, leader, and manager at many levels. For more details please have a look at my LinkedIn profile or my work history (aka: résumé, resume, curriculum vitae, CV).
My other vocation is flying. I'm an Instrument Rated Commercial Pilot and Advanced Ground Instructor. I love to fly and I continue to build time in piston and turbine fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft - I currently fly Traffic Watch for Airborne Broadcast Services out of Livermore Airport. My active logbook shows that as of May 21, 2013 I have logged 1133 flight hours. I'm a member of AOPA and EAA and hope to build my own experimental aircraft some day.
I joined the West Valley Flying Club (WVFC) in 1998. In 2010 I was elected to the WVFC Board of Directors and served as the Chairman of the Board. After serving out my two year term in 2012 I was then appointed to the on-going position of Chief Information Officer. As CIO I continue to oversee the modernization and operation of the club's technical infrastructure. Independant of my elected and appointed positions in the club I now also teach private pilot ground school at the club's San Carlos Airport location.
Some of my other hobbies include: Amateur Radio (I hold an Extra Class license and still operate CW, aka Morse Code, every year during Field Day), Emergency Preparedness (I've been EMT, SCBA, and Wilderness First Aid certified), Woodworking, Hiking (including climbing Mt. Shasta), backcountry exploration by 4x4, visiting State and National Parks, Bicycling (in 2006 I completed the Honolulu Century Ride with Team-in-Training), Running (I ran the Rock 'n Roll 1/2 Marathon in San Jose in 2006 and the Dipsea in 2008), Skiing, Chess, and taking family vacations. I regularly donate blood (typically platelets via ABC) at the Stanford Blood Center and have so far donated over seven gallons. On a related note, I am also a registered donor with the National Marrow Donor Program, aka Be The Match.
I've done some volunteer work over the years, including: Disaster Services Volunteer with The American Red Cross, a member of the ARES/RACES emergency communications services, and a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight. I have also done volunteer work for some of our local public schools in the Redwood City School District and the Sequoia Union High School District. Years ago I helped design and implement a campus network for Roy Cloud School and taught a 4th and 5th grade chess class at North Star Academy. I have been an advisor to the joint Woodside / Carlmont High School Robotics Team, known as Team100. I was also an assistant coach for the Woodside High School Quiz Kids team and helped out with the Track & Field and Cross Country teams.
